Cross over, Grandma

>> Thursday, May 14, 2009

I learned last night that my 97 year old grandma died peacefully in her sleep, early in the evening. She was born in February of 1912 and was only around seven weeks old when the Titanic sank, and five years after Oklahoma became a state. I have the fondest memories of her when as young children, my brother and I would go to our grandparents' farm and spend weeks during the summer. They had an old Victorian house with a big wrap-around porch and a huge oak tree in the front with a tire swing, a red barn with cats, a garden, and ponds stocked with fish.

Grandma is home now with Grandpa and her daughter, (my mother), and I know they are happy to see her. Thank you Grandma for all the love you gave when you were with us. We'll be seeing you again soon.

Going to see Figaro!

>> Tuesday, March 3, 2009

The University of Oklahoma Opera is presenting, Le Nozze di Figaro, this weekend and since my oldest daughter is a student at OU, Steph, my daughter Heather, and I are all piling in the car and meeting Lauren, (and possibly her new boyfriend), there to see it! I'm too excited because this is only the first time for my girls to see it live and only Steph's and my second time to see it together. Besides that, we haven't gotten out of the house together for an outing like this since last summer. Too much fun!

You never know what the elves are up to while you're asleep

Steph did this last night while I was asleep. I never know what kind of surprise I'm going to awaken to when I get up every morning, but this one busted me up so much that I had to re-post it here.

My under $10 Christmas gift list

>> Monday, December 1, 2008

Because this year's financial crisis has hit our family pretty hard, we've opted to forego an expensive Christmas and put our emphasis on family time and fellowship. We're still going to give gifts, but we've chosen to limit the cost to $10 or under per person. So here's my list!

1. winter gloves
2. scented soaps
3. moisturizing body wash w/poofie-thingy (What do you call those things?)
4. pedicure stuff (nail polish, foot cream, cuticle remover, etc.)
5. soft, fuzzy, warm sockies
6. Burt's Bees lip balm (any product by Burt's Bees)
7. anything lavender scented (body spray, soap, body wash, lotion, room spray)
8. bargain classical music CD's (can find them at Hastings) My favorite composers are Mozart, (duh!), Handel, Brahms, Faure, Liszt, Chopin.
9. gourmet hot chocolate and a mug
10. anything chocolate
11. costume jewelry--especially bracelets (Thrift stores have great costume jewelry!)
12. Ross gift card
13. Sonic gift card
14. trouser socks (black, tan, creme)
15. Christmas ornaments

I'm Thankful for You

>> Thursday, November 27, 2008

Thanksgiving is the appointed time
for focusing on the good in our lives.
In each of our days,
we can find small blessings,
but too often we overlook them,
choosing instead to spend our time
paying attention to problems.
We give our energy
to those who cause us trouble
instead of those who bring peace.
Starting now,
let’s be on the lookout
for the bits of pleasure in each hour,
and appreciate the people who
bring love and light to everyone
who is blessed to know them.
You are one of those people.
On Thanksgiving,
I’m thankful for you.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Isn't she beautiful?

>> Monday, November 10, 2008

Okay, sometimes I just have to brag about my kids. This is my oldest, Lauren, pictured here at a Marie Antoinette Soiree with one of her friends at the University of Oklahoma where she is a freshman majoring in International Studies and French. She is so advanced in French after her year in France as an exchange student that she has been placed in junior and senior level classes. Her goal is to go on to graduate school to become an interpreter/translator, possibly for the UN. She's quite the intelligent, loving, kind, outstanding, and lovely young woman, and Mom couldn't be more proud!

We love each other, but it's the laughter that keeps us together

Willow made a post yesterday about laughter and challenged all her bloggy friends to find a picture of themselves laughing and post it. Most of my readers know that laughter is the cornerstone of Steph's and my relationship. If it weren't for the sense of humor that we've been able to display through some really rough times, I seriously doubt that I would be sitting here still crazy in love with this person whom I claim to be my best friend and the love of my life.

The above photo was taken at Laxenburg, just about 10 miles outside of Vienna, Austria a little over three years ago. Steph and I were in the middle of being filmed for the documentary "Mozartballs". Our screenwriter, Thomas Wallner, caught Steph and me in a moment of silliness and captured it on his camera phone.

Barack Obama with Ellen on balancing family

>> Thursday, October 16, 2008

Last night, as Steph and I watched the last of the presidential debates on CNN, I noticed that almost consistently, Obama scored higher with women than with men. As I thought about it more, it was easy to understand why. Obama appeals to women because he has a genuine love and respect for them. It is reflected in his demeanor, in the way he lights up when he talks about his lovely wife, Michelle, and his two precious daughters. It is also reflected in his policies from his stand on Roe vs. Wade to his support of equal pay and treatment for women in the workplace. He also demonstrates a calm, gentle ,steady, strength, which is attractive to women and makes them feel important and secure.

I found a video this morning of Obama with Ellen DeGeneres, earlier this year, discussing the balance of family with his political career. Watch this and you'll see the appeal in action. Wouldn't you just love to have this family in the White House?

Going Back to Birmingham

>> Sunday, October 12, 2008

My partner, Steph, wrote this song today. It says it all.

His face shines with triumphant light, with faith and dreams and pride,
His heart beats with a fervent hope for all he feels inside.
He says that we are better than fear and hate and spite,
As he holds out hope for all of us to conquer might with right.

And he's going back to Birmingham to reclaim what he's lost,
He never minds the danger and he never counts the cost;
He carries on the torch of hope, although the flame's been tossed,
Yes, he's going back to Birmingham, the road already crossed.

***
Her son has never known the hate upon dark hearts ingrained,
She would not have him learn that now after all that she has gained;
A daughter of the storm's recess, her hope now swells unchained,
As she teaches him to fully live the freedom that's remained.

And she's going back to Birmingham to reclaim what she's lost,
She never minds the danger and she never counts the cost;
And she still dares to have the hope upon her heart embossed,
Yes, she's going back to Birmingham, the road already crossed.

***

Our voices rise in one accord, "Equality for all!"
We will not trip or stumble, we will not shun the call;
Marching on the Freedom Trail with hope that will not pall,
Believing that the path we forge will lead to peace for all.

And we're going back to Birmingham to reclaim what we've lost,
We'll never mind the danger and we'll never count the cost;
And we still dare to dream the dream whose flame will not be tossed,
Yes we're going back to Birmingham, the road already crossed.

The World's most beautiful music: Libera Me from the Fauré Requiem

>> Monday, September 8, 2008

Two years ago I had the joy of performing the Fauré Requiem with The Stillwater Chamber Singers in our fall concert, which was a concert for All Saints Day, honoring and remembering our loved ones who have passed on before us. Micah, (Steph's youngest son), invited his dad and one of his dad's friends to come down that same weekend and they attended the concert. Both of them were moved to tears.

Tonight, the Stillwater Chamber Singers start rehearsals for our new concert season, and our first concert is going to be another All Saints Day concert, since the last one was so successful. However, this year, Micah's dad won't be able to be with us because he passed from this life last June.

Today I am featuring the Libera Me from Fauré's hauntingly gorgeous Requiem, in memory of Bill Atwell and in honor of Micah, whom I have grown to love and appreciate more than words can express.

The bass soloist featured in this recording is James Morris.

On reaching milestones

>> Wednesday, August 13, 2008

I went to work this morning without even giving it a second thought. When I got to work, I saw the school bus go by and it dawned on me that today was the first day of school. And then it hit me--"I didn't take anyone to school today!" With Lauren starting at OU in 10 days and Heather starting at OSU on Monday, (my son lives with his dad in Oklahoma City), I've entered a new phase in my life.

Today I started collecting boxes for Lauren to pack her things in. She's moving out. She now has her own apartment, and in less than two weeks she will be out of the nest. I'm not really sure how I feel about it yet.

An afternoon at the theater

>> Saturday, July 12, 2008

For the last couple of months my girls and I have been looking forward to today, for just before Lauren came home from France I bought tickets to take them to see the touring production of Andrew Lloyd Weber's The Phantom of the Opera at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center. Both of them have seen the film, but neither have seen it on stage. I saw it a number of years ago, when the kids were small, and I loved it. Now that they are young adults, I thought it a great experience to have with my girls. Afterwards we will be meeting their grandparents for dinner at one of our favorite spots, Mimi's Cafe. We're looking forward to a wonderful day!

Here's a clip from the film of my very favorite scene!

She's HOME!

>> Monday, June 23, 2008

After ten months as a foreign exchange student in Brittany, France, our daughter, Lauren, returned home safe and sound, albeit severely jet lagged and exhausted, last night at around 10:00p.m. She had a wonderful experience and of course had mixed feelings about returning home, along with experiencing some reverse culture shock. Below are a few pictures from her return and subsequent "Welcome Home" party with the family.

The aroma of percolating coffee

>> Thursday, June 12, 2008

I've never been much of a coffee drinker. I'm not particularly fond of it, and if I drink too much of it, it gives me a headache. However, I've always been rather partial to the aroma. I love to walk by coffee shops and/or cafes and take in the delicious aroma of all the various brews. I most especially like the smell of coffee when mingled with the redolence of eggs and bacon frying in a skillet. It always triggers something in me that leaves me feeling warm and content. One day I sat down and tried to figure out what it was about these aromas that were so appealing to me and it quickly came to me that they brought back some very pleasant childhood memories.

My maternal grandparents lived on a large farm near Bowden, a small rural community just between Tulsa and Sapulpa, Oklahoma. Their house was a large Victorian, built a few years before statehood, (that was in 1907). It was two storied with a creaky wooden stairway, a front parlor, a dining room, and kitchen in the back, with a squeaky wooden screen door that locked with a metal hook. It had a huge wrap-around porch with a gigantic oak tree in the front. Grandpa hung a tire swing from one of the branches for us to swing on. I'm not sure how many acres he had, but it was quite a lot. He had cattle & chickens, two large ponds that he kept stocked with catfish, a big wooden barn with cats, a huge vegetable garden laden with lettuce, tomatoes, squash, peas, green beans, carrots, sweet potatoes, and corn, fruit orchards with peaches and pears, red & green peppers of several varieties, blackberry & raspberry bushes, and a flower garden. There were streams and meadows, and lots of places to run and play. It was a childhood dreamland.

One of my fondest memories is waking up early in the mornings to the smells of bacon and eggs frying in Grandma's cast iron skillet, and freshly ground coffee perking in the percolator, (this was before automatic drip coffee makers). I would try to sneak down the creaky wooden stairs in my footie pajamas, down the hallway, through the dining room, past the huge gas stove, to the kitchen doorway. I'd hide for just a second and then I'd jump out, shouting, "BOO!". Grandma would always jump and pretend to be startled. "You SCARED me!", she would exclaim, although I knew she was kidding because there was no way that she couldn't have known I was coming, between the squeaky stairway and creaking floorboards.

Years later, the aromas of bacon frying and coffee brewing always bring these happy memories forward and I am reminded of how very blessed I was to have grown up with such experiences. As a child I didn't understand that it wasn't like this for every child, and that one day I would cherish these memories, and even long for those early mornings at Grandpa and Grandma's farm.

UPDATE: JUNE 16, 2008

I received a phone call from my dad in Tulsa informing me that Grandma had collapsed in her nursing home room sometime during the night. She is currently in the hospital battling a number of infections in her intestines as well as pneumonia. She is 96 years old.

Cat on a fence

>> Tuesday, June 10, 2008

One of the most enjoyable things about sitting out on our patio is watching the cat as she goes about doing her "cat thing" in the backyard. Cats are fascinating creatures, and ours loves it when we all come out to sit on the patio. Our backyard is small, but we have created an oasis where we retreat on warm summer evenings and on weekends. And Sweetie is never happier than when we're all out there. That yard is her domain and she is content to jump up onto the 8 ft wooden privacy fence and walk up and down the rails, scouting out the numerous birds that fly dangerously close, while we all watch her, and laugh out loud over how she tries to balance the fence rail at the same time she's leaping up, trying to snag one of those winged dive bombers, that are trying to divert her attention from the nest they've built in the corner of the patio overhang.

One evening, as Steph observed how the cat tried to keep her balance in the corner of the fence, she got the idea to build her a small perch behind the rose trellis, right in the northwest corner. Steph went out and bought a cheap piece of plywood and nailed it right onto the railing, as well as the the trellis. I've never seen a cat take to anything more quickly! Sweetie spent the whole evening on her perch, scouting, observing, and sunning--just the perfect place for a cat!

Yesterday was a big day at our house. Heather graduated from high school and the whole family and a number of our friends were here to help her celebrate her accomplishments. A special thanks goes to Steph who worked hard the entire week on getting the house ready and on the wonderful food for the reception. It was really amazing! Here are a few pictures! Busy day

>> Friday, May 23, 2008

Today began with my going to the gym to get my work out done before the rest of the day's activities overtake me. Heather graduates from high school today and we have family and friends coming in from out of town to help us celebrate this milestone in Heather's life. Next I have to get out the ironing board and iron the outfit that I plan to wear this evening, as well as iron Heather's graduation gown. Then I plan to help Steph with all of the last minute cleaning--vacuuming, etc.

I'll check back in tomorrow with pictures from graduation and Heather's party...
