>> Sunday, November 16, 2008

Don't tell Tulsans that they're living in the reddest, most socially backwards state in the union! They'll just tell you that it's time for that to change! ROCK ON, TULSA!

A message from a former Republican to the Republican Party

When I registered to vote in 1978, at the age of 18, I registered as a Republican. I remained a Republican until four years ago, when I changed my registration to the Democratic party, just prior to the 2004 elections. My reasons for changing parties? One simple reason--you have forgotten who you are and who you represent, and that you are bound to the principles upon which this nation was founded, of liberty and equality for all, no exceptions.

You have forgotten the "People" in "We The People" and have abandoned your defense of and duty to the great Constitution of the United States of America for "the win", even at the cost of the freedom, liberty, and equality that our Constitution guarantees each and every citizen of this great nation. You have allied yourselves with and identified as the "base" of your once great party, the Christian Religious Right, and abandoned the principles of the separation of church and state for theocratic dominionism. Your abandonment of the principles laid out in The Establishment Clause found in the First Amendment of our Constitution has been disatrous for our nation, and if you continue to abandon the Constitution for religious ideology as an essential and central aspect of our laws and foreign policy decisions, it will spell the end of this once great Democratic Republic.

I end this with a quote from one of your party's greatest, Barry Goldwater. *

The religious factions will go on imposing their will on others unless the decent people connected to them recognize that religion has no place in public policy. They must learn to make their views known without trying to make their views the only alternatives... We have succeeded for 205 years in keeping the affairs of state separate from the uncompromising idealism of religious groups and we mustn't stop now. To retreat from that separation would violate the principles of conservatism and the values upon which the framers built this democratic republic.

Heed his warning, or your party will fail.

A call to Californians to vote "No" on Prop 8

>> Monday, November 3, 2008

If you're from California and you're reading this, I encourage you to think long and hard about the important decision you're going to make tomorrow regarding not only the future of GLBT's in your own state, but for the entire nation. California is the trend-setter. Whatever California does, the rest of the nation eventually follows suit. If you, one of the most progressive states in this country, write discrimination into your state constitution, it will make it easier for the radical right to do the same to ours. However, if you vote to uphold equality and freedom, then you will pave the way for our great nation to do the same. Please continue to be the fair, equality-loving, progressive and trend-setting state that you have always been and reject discrimination. Vote "No" on Proposition 8.

Wake-up call!

>> Sunday, August 24, 2008

I've just finished reading a powerful book entitled, American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America by Chris Hedges. This book exposes the agenda of people like James Dobson, Timothy LaHaye, Pat Robertson and the like and brings to light their push for power and how they have become bedfellows with conservative, right-wing politicians, as well as with mega corporations like Wal Mart, large industry, big oil corporations, and manufacturing to form a base so powerful as to take over the entire structure of this nation and usher in a totalitarian, theocratic, government.

It is a must-read for anyone who is concerned about the direction in which this country has been heading under the current administration and a wake-up call to all who are dedicated to the preservation of liberty, equality, and freedom in this land we call "America".

Random drug testing in the public schools

>> Wednesday, February 27, 2008

The Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution states:

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

I just found out yesterday, that my daughter, Heather, was subject to a mandatory random drug test at school the other day. At the beginning of the school year I had to sign permission for Heather to be randomly tested in order for her to be able to participate in the Pioneer Chorale. I did so, but only under protest because I felt it was a violation of the 4th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution which governs unwarranted search of person or property without probable cause. When I found out that they tested her on Monday, I was pissed, and even though I had signed the permission slip, (I had to or Heather couldn't be in the Chorale), I decided that I was going to lodge a larger protest than the one I made when I signed the slip. The following is a letter that I typed to Heather's principal and to the director of the Chorale:

Dear Mr. ******,

My name is Lynette ***** and my daughter, Heather ******, is a senior at Stillwater High School. My purpose in writing this letter to you is to register my protest of Heather's recently being subject to a random drug test, which I believe to be in clear violation of Heather's 4th Amendment Constitutional rights. I understand that in order for Heather to participate in the Pioneer Chorale that I had to sign permission authorizing the school to test her, which I did under protest. As a citizen of this nation, state, and community I feel that it is not only my right, but my obligation to protest an action by an agency of those governments that are sworn to honor and uphold my Constitutional rights.

Enclosed you will find two articles which support my protest, and outline in a very clear and concise manner the opinions that I share with the authors on the subject of random drug testing and why it is not only ineffective in deterring drug use among children, but is also a violation of our children's Constitutional rights. I ask and encourage you to read them and take them into consideration.

Respectfully,
K. Lynette *****

School Drug Testing Violates Rights

Blowing Smoke: Why Random Drug Testing Doesn't Reduce Student Drug Use

My daughter is an outstanding student and citizen with absolutely no record as a trouble-maker at school or a police record. She has given no "probable cause" to have her person searched, nor was there a warrant issued. Is this not clearly a violation of her 4th Amendment rights?

This is scary stuff, folks.
