The World's most beautiful music: Massenet: "Meditation" from Thais

I've always loved this gorgeous piece, but never more than when it is played by the incomparable Yo Yo Ma. Sit back, close your eyes and breathe it in.

Hi Lynette,

Always beautiful no matter how many times we hear it but this cello version adds a new lustre.

Mmmm - it's as serene as gently floating on a calm lake in my kayak.

Oh, heavens...I've loved this for years but only as the more famous solo violin work. The cello is just heavenly.

I agree that the Meditation is one of the most beautiful pieces ever written - for any instrument. For me though, although Yo Yo Ma's cello version is superb, I prefer the piece on violin. I just like the ridiculously high and delicate notes and midpoint and end. If you have never heard Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg's version on the Mendehlsson Violin Concerto (EMI) album, you are missing, in my opinion, the most beautiful performance of this piece that has ever been recorded.
