Could it be Chopin?

>> Friday, May 29, 2009

Way back in 1973 when the soon-to-be great singer/songwriter Barry Manilow created his debut album entitled simply Barry Manilow, he included a piano driven number lifted straight from Chopin's Prelude no 20 in C minor called Could It Be Magic. The Julliard educated pianist went on to become one of the most popular and successful songwriters and entertainers in history and still performs in his own show at the Las Vegas Hilton as well as tours all over the world.

Presented are first, Chopin's Prelude no. 20 in C minor, (played by pianist Arthur Rubinstein), followed by the Chopin inspired Could It Be Magic, by Barry Manilow.

I had his first LP album! Man, I used to listen to that thing a lot. I didn't know he was a Juilliard grad!

Actually, Barry didn't graduate from Julliard because he didn't have enough money to attend after the first semester but to even be admitted was quite an accomplishment for someone who taught himself how to play piano.

I think I owned every one of his albums!

And Crissy is correct. He didn't graduate from Julliard. He put himself through the first semester by working at CBS. It was while he was at CBS that he was contracted to write some commercial jingles, including the McDonald's "you deserve a break today", and after that he became the intermission act for Bette Midler and then the rest is history.

Hi Lynette,

Thanks for the walk down Memory Lane. I think there must have been a time for everyone when Barry was IT! And Chopin's pretty good too!
