On this, the 200th anniversary of the death of Franz Joseph "Papa" Haydn, I would like to present this lovely video tribute created by the city of Vienna in honor of the occasion. There was perhaps no composer in Vienna who was loved more than Haydn.

Papa Haydn's dead and gone,
but his memory lingers on.
When his mood was one of bliss,
he wrote jolly tunes like this.
(from my old piano lesson days) ;^)
Papa's music never fails to bring a smile to my face. I found a wonderful book at a used book store about Haydn, titled "Joseph Haydn: Eighteenth Century Gentleman and Genius" and contains transcripts of interviews by Georg August Griesinger and Albert Christoph Dies with Haydn. If you can find a copy of it, it makes for fascinating reading! You really get a feeling for Haydn's personality. After reading it, I wished so much that I could sit down and talk with Papa over coffee! He seemed truly a "gentleman and a genius" a very gentle soul.
Hi Lynette,
BBC Radio 3 devoted the whole of yesterday to Haydn's music, with broadcasts from across Europe. So I'm now familiar with a lot more Haydn than I was!
I haven't watched the video yet, e ven though I knew of its existence, because I have been trying to create my "own" Haydn Year over the last twelve months or so.
Visiting the house were he died, this past Saturday, was a truly touching moment in my search for the "real" Haydn.
