If you think she sang an incredible Cherubino, you should hear her as Rosina in Rossini's The Barber of Seville! Flicka's gonna blow your socks of with her rendition of "Una voce poco fa".
Wow! That not only blows my socks off but my hiking boots as well!! What an incredible talent!
The more I listen to these videos on your blog, Nettl, the more my admiration and awe of opera singers increases! I think it's far and away far more difficult to be an opera singer than an instrumental musician. To sing opera, you have to be a musician, a singer, an actor, and a linguist, all rolled into one! Again I say, Wow!!
Ah, von Stade! This strikes me as one of the several roles that that could otherwise nowadays be considered more appropriate for bigger voices if she hadn't sung them and worked her magic. Thank goodness for Flicka; she gives me all the defense I need to fend off the dreaded "perhaps you're a soprano". :) This the first on my list of arias to tackle after I finish up with my recital.
I'm so glad you stopped by Jennifer! I see that you're a student at OU. I have a daughter in the French department there. :)
I know what you mean by the dreaded, "Perhaps you're a soprano"! It grated on my nerves and cost me an extra year in graduate school. What a nightmare! Next time they say that to you, ask them if they've ever heard the term "lyric mezzo"?

She is truly a lovely person, too. I was lucky enough to hear a live recital. Very, very charming lady.

And singers are often looked down upon by other members of the musical community as the "ditzes". It's obvious that we're not.
I was fortunate to see von Stade in Rossini's "La Cenerentola" when she was in her prime. I've always adored her.

Most delightful in Semiramide(sp?).
Jennifer! I know who you are now! You were the WONDERFUL Cherubino in OU's production of Figaro! We're friends on Facebook. Welcome to my blog! :)
