The darker side of hope

Racism doesn't end with the election of a black president. Already President-Elect Obama has been the target of two assassination plots by white supremists and was the most heavily guarded Presidential candidate in U.S. history. He gave his acceptance speech at Grant Park from behind a two-inch thick bullet-proof glass and his security team includes a Police S.W.A.T. team of heavily armed guards. Family outings are a thing of the past. This is the price of being the first black president in our history.

Sad is the only word that comes to mind. I deplore racism of any type and have written about me concern for his safety on my blog.

On the other hand, there are some things coming out that are openly racist toward white people that have been openly racist. Yes, racism works both ways and a black president doesn't give anyone who is black to be hurtful.

Obama can't afford to have that -- it will undermine his presidency terribly. If it is allowed, he will lose his credibility.

Does anyone but me remember that he may have black skin but the people who raised him to be the man he is were white?

A friend of mine who is of mixed race says she can't be a racist without offending her ancestors or someone in her family.

We all could learn from her.

This picture say it all right here. Now that we have elected Barack Obama, we owe it to him to protect him with everything we have. We owe Michelle, her husband and his daughters, their father.
He is a national treasure. Let us make it so. We are Americans and YES WE CAN to this!
